The Hampshire Buildings Preservation Trust (HBPT) is celebrating 50 years of saving and repurposing the county’s rich heritage of historic buildings with a special event at Bursledon Windmill on Thursday 25 September 2025.

The event is the first at the windmill, which is currently closed to visitors following the end its lease with Hampshire County Council in 2024. HBPT is planning to reopen the windmill to visitors and as an events venue.

The event “Repurposing historic buildings for a better world: Celebrating 50 years of historic buildings conservation and ensuring we prepare for future challenges” will be a thought-provoking day exploring the Trust’s achievements and the future of our historic built environment with talks, hands–on workshops, demonstrations and a rare tour around the windmill. It will help to put the spotlight on 50 years of saving and repurposing Hampshire’s rich built environment.

Amongst the speakers will be Daniel Ayre, Winchester Conservation Office; built heritage writer and campaigner Celia Clark; author and retired architect Bill Fergie and HBPT Chairman Peter Goodship to share their expertise and case studies. Workshops include traditional brick making and a timber frame structures demonstration.

All profits will go towards the windmill’s ongoing repair so the Trust can strive to re-open the site as Hampshire’s only working windmill. Tickets and the full agenda are available http://bit.ly/4oUwiMm
